Private Flats Charter vs Party Boat in Key West

If you are planning a Key West fishing day, you will see two very different options: a private flats charter and a party boat. Party boats are cheaper per person and leave on a set schedule. Private flats charters cost more up front and put the whole boat — and the fishing plan — in your group's hands. Which one fits your vacation depends on what you want out of the water.

We provide water and Gatorade in a cooler with ice on every private flats charter.

I am Capt. Srb with Always Somethin' Outfitters. We run private light-tackle flats trips for small groups who want sight-fishing, species choice, and a day that does not feel like a floating bus. Here is a clear comparison so you can book with confidence.

What a party boat is good for

A party boat (also called a head boat) sells tickets by the seat. You share the rail with dozens of anglers, fish bait over deeper structure or wrecks, and keep what is legal when the bite is on. It is social, predictable on timing, and easy on the wallet if you are solo or just want a few hours of lines in the water.

The tradeoff is control. You do not pick the spot. You do not pick the species beyond what the boat is set up for that day. You wait your turn at the rail, and the experience is built for volume — not for stalking a single permit on a skinny flat.

What a private flats charter gives you

On a private flats charter, the boat is yours. We pole and run the Key West and Lower Keys flats looking for bonefish, tarpon, permit, barracuda, and whatever else the tide puts in front of us. Sight-fishing means you see the fish before the cast — clear water, polarized glasses, and quiet feet on the deck.

You choose the pace. Want to focus on bonefish all morning? We can. Want a mixed light-tackle day with shots at tarpon when they show? We adjust. Kids or first-timers get coaching on every cast instead of competing for space at a crowded rail. Photos, releases, and the route are built around your crew.

Cost: per person vs private boat

Party boats win on sticker price per seat. A private charter looks higher until you divide by your group. Our rates are 3 hours for $389, 4 hours for $549, and 6 hours for $849 for the whole private skiff. Split four ways, a four-hour flats day is often in the same conversation as a long party-boat ticket — with far more fishing attention per angler.

What you are buying on a private trip is time with a captain who is reading water for your group alone, not managing a rail of strangers. If your vacation priority is a shared, low-cost outing, a party boat can make sense. If your priority is quality shots and a custom day, private wins.

Species, style, and who should book which

Choose a party boat if you want a casual group outing, are traveling solo on a tight budget, or mainly want to bend a rod over bait without learning the flats. Choose a private flats charter if you want sight-fishing, a shot at bonefish, tarpon, or permit, coaching for kids or beginners, or a boat that leaves when you are ready and fishes where the conditions say to go.

Flats fishing rewards patience and good light. It is not always a numbers game. Some of our best days are a handful of perfect shots and a fish you will remember. Party boats measure success differently — and that is fine. Just book the product that matches the story you want to tell when you get home.

How to book a private flats day

We provide rods, tackle, and license. Always Somethin' provides water and Gatorade in a cooler with ice on every charter. You bring polarized sunglasses, sun gear, any extra snacks you want, and tip cash. Tell me your dates, how many people, and what you hope to catch. I will recommend 3, 4, or 6 hours based on your goals — slam attempts and mixed-species days usually want more time on the water.

Questions or ready to lock a date? Email Capt.Srb@alsocharters.com or call (386) 285-8402. Always Somethin' Outfitters — private Key West flats fishing, your boat, your pace.
