Key West Flats Fishing: What It Is, What You’ll Catch & How to Book

Flats fishing in Key West is sight-casting in clear, skinny water for bonefish, tarpon, permit, barracuda, and whatever else the tide pushes across the bank. It is quiet, visual, and personal — the opposite of a crowded rail on an offshore party boat.

I am Capt. Srb with Always Somethin' Outfitters. Our private flats and light-tackle charters are built for anglers and families who want to see the fish before they cast, learn the rhythm of the tide, and book a trip length that fits the day.

Flats fishing vs offshore and party boats

Offshore trips push into deeper water for pelagics and bottom fish. Party boats put a lot of anglers on one rail with a shared schedule. Flats fishing is different: we work clear banks, mangrove edges, and light-tackle water where you cast to fish you can see — or to fish we know are there because of wakes, pushes, and bait.

That means fewer people, more coaching, and a boat that can relocate when the wind or tide changes. If you want photos of turquoise water and a bent rod in skinny water, the flats are your lane. If you want a cooler full of deep-water fillets, say so and we will talk honestly about whether a light-tackle day still matches your goals — many guests mix a flats morning with other plans on their Key West trip.

What you will catch by season

Bonefish love warm, clear flats and moving tides — strong from late spring through fall, with weather-dependent winter windows. Tarpon peak with the spring and early-summer migration, with resident fish offering shots in other months. Permit are the puzzle piece: selective, worth every cast when they show. Barracuda and other light-tackle predators keep the day alive when the "big three" are quiet.

No two weeks are identical. A private charter lets us chase what the day is giving — not what a brochure promised last year.

Who flats fishing is for

Flats days work for couples, friends, and families who can listen, cast (or learn), and enjoy the quiet. Kids do well when we keep expectations friendly and celebrate every eat. Experienced fly anglers get the classic Key West experience; newer spin anglers get coaching without feeling rushed. If someone in your group has mobility limits, tell me up front so we plan comfortable casting lanes and boarding.

You do not need to be an expert. You need curiosity, sunscreen, and a willingness to make the next cast better than the last.

What is included on 3, 4, and 6 hour private trips

Every Always Somethin' Outfitters private charter includes the boat, captain, tackle, and a plan matched to the tide. Prices are transparent:

• 3 hours — $389. A focused window for sunrise, sunset, or a first taste of the flats.

• 4 hours — $549. Our most popular length: time to move, reset, and fish a real tide stage.

• 6 hours — $849. Full commitment for anglers who want to cover water and stay with changing conditions.

Bring sun protection, polarized sunglasses, water, and a camera. We handle the rods, leaders, and the "where are they?" part.
